No Money Mondays: Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport by simog

This week at No Money Monday, we’re off to the Italian coast, specifically the city of Genoa. Genoa is the sixth-largest city in Italy and boasts a stunning skyline. The port of Genoa has been historically significant in the Mediterranean, and right next to the port is the city’s airport. We’ll be exploring Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (LIMJ) this week, which serves the port and city of Genoa and is the most important airport in the Liguria region.

The first airport in the city of Genoa was built in 1930 and operated until 1955. Construction of the current airport began in 1954 and was completed by 1962, involving filling over 110 hectares of what was originally sea. The initial runway length was 5.900 feet, which was later expanded to 10.060 feet in 1986. Presently, the airport serves just over 1.2 million passengers with around 16.000 aircraft movements annually. In terms of cargo, the airport handles almost 1.100 tons each year, making it the 21st busiest airport in Italy.
