Welcome back to another edition of “No Money Mondays” here at Threshold. Today, we are heading to Lithuania, specifically to its capital, Vilnius. We are taking a look at Vilnius International Airport (EYVI), created by Ch3rka. As the biggest airport in Lithuania, the airport welcomes around 5 million passengers annually.
The airport officially opened in 1932, known then as Wilno-Porubanek. It operated a few commercial flights to different cities before the outbreak of the Second World War. Subsequently, it served as a military airfield throughout the war, until 1944. After the war, a new terminal was built in 1954. In 1993, a new departure terminal was added to accommodate the increased air traffic. This new terminal was connected to the old one. Another terminal was constructed in 2007, and surprisingly, another terminal is currently under construction, scheduled to be completed in 2025. Today, the airport serves as a hub for the airline airBaltic and is also a focus city for GetJet Airlines, Ryanair, and Wizzair. In collaboration with multiple other airlines, the airport provides flights to numerous destinations. Annually, the airport welcomes 5 million passengers and handles just under 47.500 aircraft movements.
