The airport was renamed Harrisburg International Airport in 1973, along with the opening of a new terminal, designed by William Pereira. The first operators out of KMDT were Allegheny Airlines, Trans World Airlines, and Altair Airlines. Today, the airport serves more than 12 airlines giving the city of Harrisburg 16 destinations across the US.
